Why is the statement necklace back?

Why is the statement necklace back?

Or the better question we should be asking - why did it ever leave? The statement necklace has been the defining symbol of millennial culture for years, and as a proud millennial who never stopped wearing her chunky, bejeweled, J.Crew statement necklace, I am thrilled to see them back on top.

And we have Gen Z’s shopping habits to thank for that!

Gen Z is spearheading the second-hand shopping movement. With their focus on sustainability and non-conformity, they are treasure hunting the racks at Goodwill and Plato’s for their fashion inspo.

My fellow millennials and I looked to magazine covers to tell us what brands the teen celebs were dressing themselves in. And maybe it’s the death of the magazine, or the shopping mall-less world we now live in, but Gen Z is not interested in having anyone else tell them how to act or what to wear. They are shopping our discarded closets and making them their own.

And it’s not only statement necklaces! Of course we’re all still terrified of the low-rise jean comeback. They are turning to business casual for their going-out outfits, though they put much more emphasis on the “casual” aspect. Even bermuda shorts are back?! Which will forever confuse me.

I also can’t help but be a little annoyed that after years of being called chuegy and basic, I finally gave my skinny jeans away and embraced the barrel-leg pants, my culture is now considered cool again. But I will take what I can get.

My takeaway from the cyclical nature of fashion? Just wear what you like! You will always look cool in something you love.
